It is a pleasure to kick off 2007, the 15th anniversary of Volunteer Maryland's launch. In 1992, Governor William Donald Schaefer established our program to help citizens tackle Maryland's critical human and environmental problems.

In this edition of VMail, you'll find a glimpse of our program results since that time along with a spotlight on one current Volunteer Maryland partner and AmeriCorps member. Enjoy!

15 Years of Service in Maryland

Since 1992, we have worked with hundreds of nonprofit partners and program members to mobilize an army of citizens to volunteer in their communities--more than 72,000 across the state.

Spotlight on Community Mediation Program

Since September, Volunteer Maryland has had the privilege to work with Baltimore's Community Mediation Program, a nonprofit agency dedicated to non-violent dispute resolution that serves individuals and families. Volunteer Maryland Coordinator Kevin Chase is working with Community Mediation Program staff and existing volunteers to launch a new teen mediator program that will engage 40 teens in positive community building and conflict resolution activities throughout Baltimore.

Recruiting Boomer Volunteers

Several months ago, VMail included an article on the Baby Boom generation reaching retirement age and its implications for the field of volunteer management. Understanding that the work styles, motivations, and expectations of this dynamic group of Americans are considerably different than the previous generation, volunteer mangers are sure to face challenges in retooling their volunteer programs to appeal to this group. In this issue, we wanted to point you in the direction of a number of resources, all available for free online, that may help your organization to attract volunteers of this age group.
